4. Methods of Ranking Books

There is a label on spine of the book which is the call number, it consists of alphanumeric characters.

Methods of ranking books are based on the call number. Normally call numbers of books in our library have two lines: the top line is the code of Chinese Library Classification (CLC) and the bottom line is the category number

Chinese Library Classification represents contents of the book.

Generally category number is the author number, which is the initial letter of author's surname in our library. There are other conditions such as biographies, the category number of a biography is the initial letter of the biographee's name.

Using " Mastering Power Builder 7.0 " as an example, the call number is TP311.56/CD5 , “TP311.56” is the code of CLC, which means software tools in the CLC. 'CD5' is the category number, we rank books in the numeric order.

If it is a Western language book, the first letter of the CLC number will be 'L'; Japanese books' CLC number start with 'JA' and Russian books are 'RU'.

You will find the books that you want quicker if you know the methods of ranking books better.

The way of ordering the call number

Compare the codes of CLC first, if the codes are the same, then compare the category number, all the numbers are ordered from smallest to largest.
